It was basically a Spitfire with a fast-back coupe style and a six-cylinder engine, taking its styling cue from the Le Mans racing Spitfires of 1965.

Initially it was criticised for its poor handling characteristics, and the Mark 2 was then fitted with wishbone suspension which overcame the problems. As a result, the Mk 2 and early Mk 3’s are widely regarded as the best of the three models.

The pen of Giovanni Michelotti can clearly be seen in the styling of the GT6. The GT6 Mk3 was launched simultaneously with the Spitfire Mk 4, hence the same rear-end design. This sported a re-designed bonnet and squared off rear end similar to the late Spitfires. The wishbone suspension was again used up to chassis no. KE20000, after which the swing spring rear axle was used.

GT6 Mk1
Produced from July 1966 to September 1968
Total built: 15 818
Engine: 6 in line – 74,7 x 76 mm – 1998 cc
Power: 71,25 kW @ 5000 rpm

GT6 Mk1

GT6 Mk2
Produced from July 1968 to December 1970
Total built: 12 066
Engine: 6 in line – 74,7 x 76 mm – 1998 cc
Power: 78 kW @ 5000 rpm

GT6 Mk3
Produced from October 1970 to December 1973
Total built: 13 042
Engine: 6 in line – 74,7 x 76 mm – 1998 cc
Power: 78 kW @ 5000 rpm

Triumph GT6 The Triumph GT6 is one of the rarer Triumphs found locally today and is therefore much sought after and was not assembled in South Africa.
